“ Insanely twisted Shadow Puppets “

A very accomplished animation artist, concept art, special effects and comics artist  – Michael Gagnes website is certainly worth visiting and exploring

You’ll find he’s worked on such films as the Iron Giant, the Land Before Time, All Dogs go to Heaven and much more – often in the role of special effects

in 1998 Michael released his first graphic novel  “A Search for Meaning – the story of  Rex “ a visual narrative comic – under his own publishing name – Gagne International Press – and has since released more than a dozen titles, cementing his reputation as an independant publisher

you can view all the pages of  “A Search for Meaning”  at Michaels site, plus watch some very nice effects and character animation from his short film “ Prelude to Eden “

You can also view no less than 12 short animations produced in Flash for MTV and recently released  – designed in silhouette style – dont miss them ! there beautifully designed and animated no further proof is needed that the tendency to realism is the only way to go in animation   –

the major credits are

Michael cagne –
creator producer director – concepts beautifully realised
Jayson Theissen and Mike Hogue –
 animation – terrific work !
Andrew Scott –
sound design – great to see the sound designer up there with the creator and the animators

the first of the films are 10 – 15 secs – long enough to set up a situation – but as they progress, their only 3 secs long – i doubt were getting the whole movie

                        Cutter  3                                         Flight 3cover

by Kazu Kabushi

Cutter – these series of drawings dramatically define the flow of action moment by moment – the visual space created by the absence of text,  contrasts well  in other areas of the comic, that are dialogue driven – there are many fine pages in the comic, which you can view at Kazu’s site

the Flight 3 cover – is available as an archival print from Gallery Nucleus – go to Gallery Nucleus or Bolt City to get the full effect in a larger version

reintroducing the amazing comic artist  Kazu kabushi – and his graphic novel – Cutter volume 3 which i note is sold out at Viper – ( volume 4 is on the way ) beautuful comic art, plus some extra material on the making of a Kazu comic is found in Cutter 3. – pages of Cutter  can be viewed at  Bolt City – make sure you see them – particiularly Volume 3

Kazu is one of those special young artists, totally engrossed in and enjoying his work – He was the organising energy behind the original and now famous comic anthology – Flight Comic volume 1 – and 2 , and the third in the series is curently under way

As well as being a very talented artist,  reading through Kazu’s postings at Bolt City, you realise he’s also very aware of and supportive of a sense of communty amongst artists, particularly comic artists of course, and Kazu has contributed alot to this community – he’s also conducts short courses in the art of comic making and visual story telling, and his work is on display at Gallery Nucleus in California –  link

at Bolt City, as well as viewing the work, you get a real sense of the experiences and values that underscore this young artists life – you can follow Kazu’s career at BoltCity – im sure it will be a long and successful one –  link

 Take flight

Kazu flight 1

An amazing image from Kazu Kibushis' story and art "Copper - Maiden Voyage" from Flight volume 1, the comic that started the Flight legend. I just love the sense of depth and space that Kazu achieves in this art. With beautiful draughtsmanship and carefully constrained color pallete, he creates a world we'd all like to fly through !

Kazu has been the editor on both Flight 1 and the recently published, Flight 2. comics. Copies of Flight 1. are still available but i wouldn't delay too long, with great artwork from
all the artists', and an intriguing concept - Flight 1. is destined to become a collectors item.

You'll find Flight 1. at Amazon - and visit Kazus' own site,
at Bolt City.
